Course Selection Guide: Part 16, High Cortisol

The Cause: Why is it high?

In TCM, long-term stress or poor sleep burns through the body’s deep energy reserves. We call this "Kidney Yin Deficiency" (running low on the body's "cooling fluid"). When the fluid is low, the body overheats, creating "False Heat." This is often combined with "Liver Qi Stagnation" (stress and emotions getting "stuck" in the body).

The Strategy: How do we fix it?

"Replenish the reserves to cool the fire, and guide the heat back where it belongs."

Instead of directly forcing the body to lower its stress hormone levels (which would be like yelling at a fire to stop burning), TCM takes a two-step approach:

1. Nourish the "Root": focus on rebuilding the body's foundational energy reserves (called "Yin"). Think of it as adding coolant to an overheated engine. This addresses the root cause of the burnout.

2. Redirect the Energy: use gentle techniques to guide the scattered "false heat" (the anxiety, the racing mind) down from the head and chest back to the lower body. This creates a sense of calm and grounding.

The Solutions: Gentle Practices

All of these exercises follow the principle of low effort, deep restoration, to calm the nervous system, not exhaust it.

Cultivating Ongoing Self-Healing • Taoist Yin-Yang Breathing: Relax the nervous system and replenishes energy.

30mins Evening Routine • Good Sleep: It helps focus a scattered mind and forces blood and energy to flow downward, easing that feeling of being "hot-headed" or anxious, restoring peace and tranquility.

56mins Daily Routine • Full Body Practice: The mind and body are interconnected and influence each other, long-term mental stress can cause physical stiffness, full body stretching can release tension stored in the body and, in turn, relax the mind.

Treat your body like a battery that needs recharging. Swap high-intensity training for these quiet practices, and the "false heat" (high cortisol) will naturally subside.
