The Course is designed because:

The spleen belongs to the earth in the five elements, and is responsible for the digestion, absorption, transportation, and excretion of all food and water in the body. Specifically, it has the following functions and features:

  • Food enters the mouth for chewing, the stomach grinds, the small intestine absorbs nutrients, the large intestine absorbs water, and the anus discharges feces. All physical and chemical changes in the entire process are controlled by the spleen.
  • The nutrients absorbed by the small intestine and the water absorbed by the large intestine are transported upward by the spleen to the lungs and heart to generate Qi (energy), blood, body fluids, and digestive juices.
  • The spleen is the acquired foundation, and it provides nutrition and energy for all internal organs, organs, and tissues.
  • The spleen restricts blood flow in blood vessels. If blood seeps out of the blood vessels, such as blood in the stool, blood in the urine, nosebleeds, excessive menstrual bleeding, etc., it is related to the decline of spleen function.
  • The spleen controls the limbs and muscles, so thin limbs and weak muscles are related to the decline of spleen function.
  • The spleen controls water metabolism and transportation, so edema is related to the spleen; some people gain weight when drinking water, which is a typical spleen problem.
  • Some people have a big belly and thin limbs because the spleen is too damp, causing spleen weakness.
  • Yellow face, wrinkles, and sagging muscles all indicate insufficient spleen function. Therefore, keeping a young face is closely related to the spleen.
  • The spleen prefers a dry environment.

Spleen in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory:

The spleen is a system.

  • The spleen and stomach are brothers, and they work together. The stomach is responsible for pushing food downward to promote the digestion process. The spleen is responsible for transporting nutrients absorbed by the small intestine upward.
  • The pancreas belongs to the spleen system. Decreased spleen function will affect pancreatic function. Stimulating the spleen meridians can improve pancreatic function.
  • White lips indicate poor spleen function, and red represents good function. Good appetite indicates good spleen function, and poor appetite indicates insufficient spleen function.
  • Overuse of the brain and excessive thinking will consume spleen energy.
  • Too little or too much saliva indicates insufficient spleen function.
  • Visceral ptosis, such as gastric ptosis, uterine ptosis, rectal ptosis, etc., indicate weak spleen energy.
  • Eating a lot but being thin indicates weak spleen energy; eating very little but being fat indicates that the spleen is too damp and has decreased function.
  • Eating too much and too full for a long time will cause fatigue of the spleen and pancreas and decreased function.

  • Frequent loose stools or diarrhea indicate that the spleen is too damp and its function is reduced.

How to maintain spleen system?

The spleen is located in the chest and are protected by the ribs. We cannot reach them, but according to the theory of TCM, we can exercise in many ways to help the spleen stay healthy.

  • Clear the spleen meridians and key acupoints to improve spleen function.

  • Massage the abdominal cavity to promote visceral peristalsis and improve spleen function.

  • The heart is the mother of the spleen, and good heart function is beneficial to spleen health.
